This is the second book by Leann Guzman that I have purchased and I read it cover to cover the day I received it. I then went thru it day by day reading and studying each devotional. Each day's subject is only one page with a place for personal notes, so you can spend as much time and thought as you like. I found something relevant and thought provoking on each page, although I spent several days on some. Very worthwhile devotional and I would recommend it to everyone.
Strong and of Good Courage is a word in season to the battle-weary soldier of the Lord. Each devotion shares a concise thought that takes us straight back to the feet of Jesus. When we kneel before God we can stand before anyone. This book equips for the battle, and gives strength to the weary.
This easy-to-read devotional book is a great tool for those who'd like to understand more about the regular spiritual battles we fight as Christians. It also helps readers understand how to apply the whole armor of God to their life. I think those new in their faith would benefit most from this month-long devotional.
As the subtitle says, this book is a devotional, a series of short daily readings to provide inspiration or encouragement, or to meditate on before prayer. Each day’s reading is a single page, so it does not require a large investment of time. And if you read it all at once, it’s thirty minutes from cover to cover.
The theme is spiritual warfare, and though the cover art and the author’s other books suggest it is aimed at a female readership, I see no reason why men couldn’t read it and benefit from it. It’s good enough for what it is; most of its weaknesses are imposed on it by the limitations of the devotional format, rather than by any shortcomings in the author’s writing.
To clarify, the very shortness of the passages prevents this book from making any of its points in depth. This leads to the making of assertions that must be accepted or rejected at face value, as there is not time or space to make the case for them. One example is “You aren’t his follower if you haven’t sacrificed something, and you won’t win if you haven’t sacrificed everything.†If you’re not already convinced of the truth of that statement, nothing in the writing will attempt to prove it.
Another by-product of the inherent brevity of the form is that it raises questions of context it won’t try to answer. For instance, one day’s reading starts with Isaiah 119-20, which promises that the willing and obedient will eat the good of the land. If God has promised me “all I need to be victorious and live an abundant, blessed life,†how do you explain those heroes of the faith in Hebrews 1137-38 “They were stoned, they were sawn in two, were tempted, were slain with the sword. They wandered about in sheepskins and goatskins, being destitute, afflicted, tormented— of whom the world was not worthy. They wandered in deserts and mountains, in dens and caves of the earth.†A devotional just doesn’t have time to put a given verse in its proper context or harmonize seemingly conflicting ideas.
If there is any fault I can attribute to the writing, rather than to the limitations of the format, it is only this Although the writer is attorney, she sometimes is not as careful about word choice as one might expect. So the devil is said to be involved in an “eternal attempt to be a god.†Of course, the devil is not eternal; his rebellion had a beginning in time, and it will have a definite end. The writer doubtless knows this. It strikes me as a bit of imprecision, a “you know what I mean†moment, of which there are a few.
What would have lifted this book above the average spiritual warfare book for me would have been a longer introduction to help the reader differentiate between the attack of the enemy and the consequences of the reader’s own flaws. Is that financial setback an attack? Or is it just the expected outcome of my lack of financial discipline? I think that new Christians are especially prone to see every negative feeling or event as an attack of the enemy. Most of us cause ourselves more problems than the devil ever does. Readers would be well served to balance a daily meditation on spiritual warfare with a daily reading of a chapter of Proverbs, as an aid to keeping things in perspective.
I think it best suited for new converts, or for established Christians who want quick daily inspirational reminders without delving into a Bible study. It provides guidance not found in a devotional calendar, which typically contains only scripture without commentary. And in an age where far too many take their inspiration from shared Facebook memes, this book provides much more insight and substance.
